Vernazza
Monterosso
The Cinque Terre Five miles of rocky coast in eastern Liguria, two promontories lie at each extremity, thousands of kilometres of dry walling, cultivated into vineyards, five southerly villages castled up on spurs of stone or disposed in clusters of very small inlets. These are the co-ordinates of the Cinque Terre (Five lands) and the villages of Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza and Monterosso. The area is now a National Park and since 1997 a UNESCO protected territory as a system of naturalistic environmental interest. This zone is characterized by the presence of precipitous slopes which have been cultivated into vineyards by means of fatiguing system of terracing the only evidence of transformation operated by the laborious human activity on the territory. The suggestive type of coastal projections on the sea with sheer cliffs that often overtake the verticality alternated with bays, winding paths and enchanting small beaches between cliffs with a profound back drop, a rich variety of ichthyic (fishing) all of which make this district an authentic natural "opera of art".
What to bring...
You may receive an additional email if there
are specific supplies needed for your workshop.
For All Workshops:
·
Unless otherwise noted in class description, you are responsible for providing your own portable easel.
·
Wooden (or other neutral-toned) mixing palette (Do not use white, disposable palette pages!)
·
Oil Paints (please pay particular attention to the brands listed):
You may bring any color palette you are comfortable with using. I use a basic palette, limiting my colors to the following specific brands. Using fewer tubes of paint lightens my backpack and provides dependable color mixtures.
o
Cad Red Deep Hue (Winton #6)
o
Ultramarine Blue (Winton #21)
o
Cad Yellow Medium (Gamblin)
o
Titanium White (Gamblin, Grumbacher, M. Graham, or other)
·
Brushes:
o
About half-dozen, high quality, bristle brushes in sizes 4-10. I suggest filberts, flats or a mixture of the two. Do not bring small brushes!!! They are not allowed in my class.
o
My preference is Silver Brush Grand Prix or Escoda Chungking.
o
Several styles of palette knives
·
Canvases:
For studio classes, bring 2, medium-sized canvases for each day of your workshop unless otherwise noted. (See note on page 2 for plein air workshops).
·
Wet Paintings Carrier:
If you are traveling by plane, you will want a way to transport your wet paintings home. Please contact me if you have questions.
·
Other:
o
Small sketchpad and pencil
o
EMPTY, sealable, non-breakable, spill-proof (clamp-lid) container for mineral spirits (such as the metal Anderson, Holbein, or Martin Universal)
o
Liquin or M. Graham walnut alkyd medium (optional, makes the paint dry more rapidly for ease in packing)
o
Odorless Mineral Spirits (OMS) IF TRAVELING BY PLANE, OMS should be purchased at your final destination. DO NOT PACK AND BRING. IT IS ILLEGAL TO BRING OMS ON FLIGHTS.
o
Paper towels and plastic grocery bags (for trash)
o
Sense of humor
“Packing for the flight” tips available upon request.
Special Needs for Plein Air Workshops:
·
Easel and Back Pack or Tote for Plein Air All of your supplies should fit comfortably in one bag or backpack and be lightweight enough for you to carry on your own. If you do not currently own portable equipment, please email me for more information. I am happy to assist you in making a decision on what type of easel to purchase for your needs. (Freestanding painting easel, French-style easel, or pochade such as OpenBox M, Guerilla, EasyL, etc.)
