About this workshop...
Saturday – get acquainted over wine and chocolate. What a way to start our journey!
Sunday – our first full day together. We’ll start by getting to know a little bit about one another. We’ll review our schedule for the week to be sure everyone’s expectations are in-line. Then we’ll get to the really fun stuff! Deciding on a format for each person to work. No, nothing’s written in stone, so you can change your mind during the week, but we’ve got to start somewhere! Remember, there is no perfect book, perfect format, or perfect idea. We’re not going to obsess; we’re going to create!
Ideally, you’ll have talked with me one on one before we travel to Cortona, so you’ll have narrowed down some of your choices before arriving. That should help cut down the amount of “stuff” you’ll bring with you to Italy.
Each day will include a combination of exploring techniques, sharing ideas, and working in our books. Today we’ll focus on paint in our books. Paint as background, paint as highlight, paint as embellishment, paint as focal point.
While we have paint drying, we’ll discuss photography tips that we can use throughout the week. Also during this time we’ll go over the photo printing options to use the rest of the week.
Note: As weather permits, plan to get out of the classroom during the day to explore the area. We’ll grab our books and a couple of other supplies and create on the go as often as practical.
Monday – it’s Texture day! We’ll experiment with different ways of getting texture in our journals. We might build these on top of our painted pages, or we could create texture on new pages.
Tuesday – Day trip together to Florence. Activities today could include a trip to the Uffizi Gallery, a visit to the Duomo, a walking tour of the city, enjoying the Ponte Vecchio, exploring the paper, fabric, and yarn store(s), or simply sipping cappuccino and absorbing the atmosphere of this lovely city.
Everyone may choose their own activities for the day and we’ll share experiences over lunch and dinner. Suggestions for how to incorporate what you’ve seen and done will be shared throughout the day as our paths cross and re-cross.
Wednesday – Pockets and envelopes. By now, we’ll collected lots of “stuff” that we want to include in our books. I love pockets and envelopes for holding ephemera. We’ll be creative with “found” papers, making our own envelopes, incorporating commercial items, embellishing and painting them as our books continue to grow.
Thursday – a wonderful outing to Orvieto. Who knows what treasures we’ll discover as we travel together today? We’re open to surprises, possibilities and wonder!
Friday – Text, Transfers and Tips. We’ll explore endless ways of adding text to the pages we’re creating, we’ll use different transfer methods to add interest to our pages, and we’ll share tips with one another as we wrap up our time together.
Note: Throughout the week our schedule is subject to change as interest, weather, and time dictate. We may discuss collage styles, touch on basic design elements, talk about archival issues, carve our own stamps, incorporate natural elements in our travel journals, alter photographs, or any other myriad of topics that interest us.
Every trip to Italy is unique. Come create your own Italian Odyssey.
