Learn how to create with two of the newest and most exiting mediums around, metal and polymer clays. We'll explore mixed media applications of these mediums while learning how to use both economically and easily at home. An emphasis on torch firing instead of expensive kilns will be offered along with methods for creating various types of patina finishes, constructions, embellishments and more. Bring nothing but your clothes and leave with beautiful pure silver and polymer masterpieces that you create by hand along with a wealth of creative knowledge. This rare and unique opportunity is limited to a small number of people. Join Lisa for an unforgettable experience of a lifetime while we create, explore and play both inside and out of class on the beautiful island of Santorini, Greece!
Day 1: Faux Dichroic Leaf Pendant - We'll start by creating intricate silver leaves in a snap. You'll learn essential methods for non-kiln firing the very first day along with simple patina-ing and achieving a hand-polished mirror finish. We'll backfill our fired leaf with a faux dichroic surface treatment on polymer clay. This will be finished with a glass-like resin that cures in minutes.
Day 2: Textured Bezel Frames - Learn how to create effortless bezel frames with rolled tube bails using fine silver clay. Our finished frames will will showcase millefiori cane work that is reminiscent of ancient mosaic tiles. Learn how to create both convex and resin dome finishes, selecting the method you prefer for creating your pendant.
Day 3 & 4: Ancient Faces - We'll create an embossed silver disc pendant that highlights a "rusted" clay face. Learn how to create textural patinated finished for polymer clay while highlighting recessed impressions with an oxidized finish. While working on refining you polishing skills, we'll learn how to create non-twist suspension mechanisms for handing your pendant, along with options for using pin-backs to create brooches. We'll complete this project with uniform stripped borders and a clay foundation, learning how to reduce the amount of silver needed to create durable substantial jewelry pieces.
Day 5: Simply Charming - We'll spend this day learning how to make both flexible silicone and rigid molds out of scrap clay. Each student will have the chance to make several molds and texture plates from both found and instructor provided embellishments, many which are vintage and one-of-a-kind. WE'll use all of the remaining clay from student kits to create small charms, pendants and embellishments which we'll fire and finish as desired. We'll also explore patina options that offer a range of colored finishes.
