Meet Gabriela Delworth
Paper Headdresses & Heraldic Fashion Workshop
Cortona is a little-known haven of Etruscan tombs, medieval alleyways, Renaissance art, sweeping views and small-town ambience. The medieval-themed Archidado Joust Festival takes place between May and June. It’s a week of costumed festivities and events that traces its origins back to the middle Ages.
It will be a week long creative experience for all of us where we will embrace the heraldry, history and romance of this fabulous place. You will learn paper art techniques to make your own crowns and tiaras in Etruscan and Medieval style.
You will learn how to design heraldic fashion pieces to wear.
But there is more…a giveaway and even a surprise project waiting for you!
We will also enjoy a day trip to Florence; will visit the best shops for additional inspiration and to gather new embellishments, ribbons and papers for our projects.
among the sights and sounds of beautiful and romantic Tuscany: olive groves, vineyards, centuries-old buildings, winding streets, texture and vibrant sunlight.
Feel Yourself...
in the warm ambiance of Cortona, overlooking Lake Trasimeno and the Val di Chiana, originally fortified by the Umbrians, claimed by the Etruscans, touched by the Renaissance, almost unchanged for centuries, one of Tuscany's jewels.
Experience...
the joy of creating paper headdresses and heraldic fashions in a relaxed and inspiring atmosphere with the expert instruction of a nationally know artist and instructor and the camaraderie of a small group of learners.
Enjoy...
great Italian food, delightful wines, new friends, breath-taking vistas, history and the hospitality of the people of Cortona.
About this workshop...
Day One: Making Antonia Salimbeni’s Wedding Bouquet
Imagine a trip to the mountains picking wild flowers to make a wedding bouquet!
Gabriela will briefly talk about the flowers used in wedding bouquets during the 13th century. And also she will teach you how to select the best flowers to pick.
You will fly back right into medieval times, will experience assembling a wedding bouquet, and also will learn how to press these romantic flowers to preserve their beauty.
Day Two: Making Antonia Salimbeni’s Wedding Tiara
Our third day will be a day of celebration. Gabriela will briefly talk about The Joust of the Archidado and the marriage of Francesco Casali and Antonia Salimbeni, the most beautiful young woman that arrived in Cortona in 1397.
We will get inspired by this medieval event to make her Wedding Tiara.
You will learn how to combine beautiful papers from your kit to resemble old textile prints in the 13th century to create look for your tiara.
You will learn the ancient technique of parchment craft, to add beautiful embossed details to your royal piece. And to add a metal look to your tiara you will experience once again the glittering technique.
The wearing of a bridal veil is wedding tradition that began in Italy.
It is a symbol of virginity, and the covering of the bride's face means she has never "known" a man before. You will learn how to incorporate a veil to your tiara.
Day Three:

You will then learn how to incorporate them into a unique Coat Of Arms.
Learn how to photo transfer onto fabric to create a design and decorate a T-Shirt.
You will learn how to embellish you it using fabric paint, glitter and metallic trims.
This will be your very own Cortona’s keepsake/souvenir to take home!
Day Five:
The Surprise Project unveiled
We are back in the studio. The Surprise Project will be unveiled and you will then find out what you will be making next. You will love it, I promise! We will have a look at our finds and will discuss the best ways to incorporate them into it.
Day Six:
The Draw
We will spend our last day together adding the final touches to our projects.
And we will end the day with a draw where two students will get the chance to win a copy of Gabriela’s new “Paper Head Dresses” book.

Cortona is one of the true jewels of the Tuscan “hill towns.” Cortona, which is often called the “City of Art,” has its origin as an Etruscan city that pre-dates Roman times with sections of its walls dating back some 2500 years. As is typical of Tuscan hill-towns, Cortona is a walled city that, for purposes of defense, was built atop a prominent geographical point. The stone buildings and streets not only have the romance, style, and charm that are particular to Tuscany, but also speak of the lives and times Cortona has witnessed. An encounter with Cortona is an encounter with music & art, with history and with spirituality. Getting to know this timeless city is a real rediscovery of our past. Cortona offers testimony to its history as well as an enchanting view of the landscape enclosed by Lake Trasimeno and the Apennine mountains.
Travel with fellow artists, family & friends! In addition to Non-participating guest options, did you know that other workshops are offered this same week! Enjoy the experience together while immersed in different topics! View calendar for details!
