Cortona, Italy

Cortona "Island in the Sky"
Cortona "Island in the Sky"

What better place to join the visual journaling craze than beautiful Cortona, Italy? Let me guide you through the techniques of quick drawing, collaging and watercolor painting as we record the sights around us. I’ll show you how to look for telling details and edit larger views, combining travel tickets, postcards, maps and photos for finished journal pages. If a picture is worth a thousand words, a painting of the same scene is priceless – and you will remember it forever!

.

Picture Yourself...
among the sights and sounds of beautiful and romantic Tuscany: olive groves, vineyards, centuries-old buildings, winding streets, texture and vibrant sunlight.
Feel Yourself...
in the warm ambiance of Cortona, overlooking Lake Trasimeno and the Val di Chiana, originally fortified by the Umbrians, claimed by the Etruscans, touched by the Renaissance, almost unchanged for centuries, one of Tuscany's jewels.
Experience...
the joy of painting in a relaxed and inspiring atmosphere with the expert instruction of a nationally know artist and instructor and the camaraderie of a small group of learners.
Enjoy...
great Italian food, delightful wines, new friends, breath-taking vistas, history and the hospitality of the people of Cortona.

Meet Caroline Coolidge Brown...

Caroline Coolidge Brown, an experienced artist, retreat leader and teacher, has gathered a loyal following of student artists of all levels in her mixed media and watercolor journaling classes. Whether she’s leading a sip and sketch crawl outside or demonstrating new techniques in the studio, she loves sharing the joy of journaling. She has exhibited across the Southeast US and is currently a partner of the Ciel Gallery in Charlotte, North Carolina.

“As a mixed media artist, I’m all about layering. Whether I’m

working on a large canvas, on a series of panels or in the

intimacy of my visual journal, I take ideas, symbols, words and

images to build layer upon layer of color and texture. For the last five years, I have been teaching workshops in visual journaling, a practice that offers an opportunity for intuitive reflection and creativity. Visual journaling combines mixed media painting, drawing and collage with personal writing and poetry. Travel journaling is a natural extension of this, a way of capturing moments and places in a form that’s much more impactful than a snapshot. Artists and writers of all levels of experience can learn easy techniques to record their adventures and incorporate memorable imagery in their journaling.”

Testimonials:

“Two years ago I heard about Caroline Coolidge Brown's art classes through a colleague.  My curiosity was peaked and I nervously signed up for one of her beginner mixed media classes.  Ever since that first class, I haven't stopped painting, drawing, creating, and challenging myself to step beyond my comfort zone.  A truly remarkable and talented teacher and artist, Caroline intuitively provides gentle support to her students, while at the same time, encourages them to take risks and to embrace spontaneity.  She is always generous with her time, knowledge, and astute feedback.  In April of this year, a dream of mine from long ago came true.  One of my mixed media pieces from Caroline's class was jury selected to be in a gallery show.  I am forever grateful and appreciative to Caroline for her unwavering belief in me.”  Deborah S. Lung

“I highly recommend Caroline Coolidge Brown as both a talented artist and a gifted teacher.  I have taken mixed media journaling classes with Caroline for the last several years.  Her classes are my favorite part of the week!  Caroline has a gentle way of supporting you so that you quickly work through any fears or concerns about the process.  She helps you connect on a deep inner level and express that connection through your art.  She always gives you the right blend of instruction, suggestion, and guidance.  She easily supports both new and seasoned artists within the group.  Caroline makes learning mixed media techniques fun and always has new ideas for the class.  She creates a space filled with compassion and creativity, and challenges each of us to take our art to the next level.  I have grown so much personally and artistically through Caroline's classes and I know that, wherever she teaches, her students will love her class!”  Beth di Nicola

As a "slow traveler" and a supporter of  "slow food" Mr. Mahoney rides trains, walks, lingers over lunch, dinner or a cup of espresso, stops to smell the roses and savors the sensory feast wherever he is!

About Cortona

Cortona is one of the true jewels of the Tuscan “hill towns.”    Cortona, which is often called the “City of Art,” has its origin as an Etruscan city that pre-dates Roman times with sections of its walls dating back some 2500 years.  As is typical of Tuscan hill-towns, Cortona is a walled city that, for purposes of defense, was built atop a prominent geographical point. The stone buildings and streets not only have the romance, style, and charm that are particular to Tuscany, but also speak of the lives and times Cortona has witnessed. An encounter with Cortona is an encounter with music & art, with history and with spirituality. Getting to know this timeless city is a real rediscovery of our past. Cortona offers testimony to its history as well as an enchanting view of the landscape enclosed by Lake Trasimeno and the Apennine mountains.
