Thursday May 14 Values, Notans and Color Studies
Demo session morning 10am-noon
· Shawn demonstrated using thumbnails of Notan sketches to choose a composition both by sketching and by a phone app.
· Shawn demonstrates using a viewfinder and the Rule of Thirds to
Create 3 compositions.
Participants try their hand at it. Choose a partner, and share the compositions with your partner. Shawn shows you how to determine focal points and choose the best composition.
· Shawn demonstrates taking the most effective Notan and turning it into a value study showing 5 values from light to dark.
Participants try their hand at making a value scale for 5 values then converting their best Notan into a value study.
· Shawn demonstrates creating a color study based on the value sketch and using that to lay out her palette in pastel.
Participants have an opportunity to make a color study.
Lunch Break
Afternoon Session:
· Shawn demonstrates how to start a painting using the studies created in the morning demo and works methodically painting from dark to light based on the value sketch & color study.
· Participants paint individually with assistance as needed/wanted for entire afternoon. (Approx. 3-4 hours)
· Clean up and return for dinner. Before dinner, please set up your easel with your fresh painting and sketches in the dining area for viewing (opt.)

Friday May 15 Three things that create perspective in a landscape…
Demo morning session 10am-12
· Shawn goes over and illustrates three things that create the illusion of perspective in a painting and makes a finished painting from studies to finish. Learn to use sighting and sight-sizing, color temperature, and values to create aerial perspective and long-distance views. (site should have a view down a mountain or village).
· Q&A

Afternoon session:
· starting with your new tools, make a value sketch &
color study showing the three things that create the illusion of perspective.
Paint from start to finish with individual help from Shawn as needed.

Saturday May 16 Breaking down a complicated scene into simple shapes
Demo morning session 10am-12
· Shawn goes over and illustrates two methods of breaking down the landscape into value/color blocks/shapes. (Lost & Found edges)
· Participants also break down using both methods and make two studies.
· Q&A
Lunch
Afternoon session:
· starting with your color study, make a painting where 80% of it is
blurred and undefined simple value/color shapes. Spend only last 30 mins of class adding details to finished painting.
· Clean up and return for dinner. Before dinner, please set up your easel with your fresh painting and sketches in the dining area for viewing (opt.)

Sunday May 17 Color Palettes & Color Theory
Demo morning session 10am-12
· Shawn goes over and illustrates three methods of choosing color palettes for your painting; complementary, split complementary, and triadic.
· She demonstrates each palette using the same scene painted three different ways.
· Participants paint-a-long making studies on provided Ampersand surfaces using the same palettes as Shawn.
· Q&A
Lunch
Afternoon session:
· starting with your color wheel and new palette choice , make a value
sketch & color study based on that palette.
Paint from start to finish with individual help from Shawn as needed until the end of the day.
· Clean up and return for dinner. Before dinner, please set up your easel with your fresh painting and sketches in the dining area for viewing (opt.)
Dinner & display
May 18 Day Trip Paint and shop in a quaint Italian town with glorious architecture! No formal demos, group will shop and explore for the morning session, then paint and explore for the afternoon session. Shawn will be available for help and guidance as needed/wanted. Group will display treasures and paintings at dinner & display.
