About this workshop...

Linda Oatman High, author of more than 25 books for children and teens, leads attendees through creative prompts that encourage authentic and powerful writing. Whether her students be published authors or beginners wishing to begin writing, Linda’s writing exercises spark creativity and spur memories and emotions long-buried, utilizing the serene surroundings of Cortona to fully incorporate sensory details within the writers’ creations. The sights, smells, sounds, tastes, and feelings of the landscape and the experience seep into the words on the page, creating fully-realized works. Linda’s students often leave her workshops with the beginnings of a novel, and several have published books as a result.

In “Writing Under the Tuscan Sun” attendees write from the heart, from the soul, from real life and memories and wishes and dreams, as well as from the adventurous spirit of a traveler who has answered the wild and wonderful call to immerse themselves within the beauty of Tuscany.

William Wordsworth said, “Fill your paper with the breathings of your heart.” Attendees pour their hearts onto the page in Linda’s workshops, and “Writing Under The Tuscan Sun” is sure to inspire, invigorate, and instruct. For those interested in publishing, Linda also includes the nuts and bolts of pursuing publication and what comes after.

Linda’s middle grade novel Somebody’s Someone, based upon her youngest son’s illness, was awarded the 2026 Pennsylvania Librarians’ Association Carolyn Field Award for best book for young people by a Pennsylvania author. Her books have won many awards and honors, and Linda also has had 3 plays produced. Her short story Nickel Mines Hardware was honored in the UK when she was the only American on a shortlist of 6 authors for The Sunday Times EFG Short Story Award. Her screenplay The Spectacular Exit Strategy won a scholarship which will send her to a castle in Spain directly after our workshop in Cortona.

Linda walked more than 600 miles on the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage in Spain in 2025, and will be doing the journey again in spring of 2027. Her screenplay is based upon the pilgrimage.

Linda is a free spirit who believes in living your dreams and finding joy and creativity everywhere, and she loves being part of the process with writers of every level discovering their own possibilities, talents, gifts, and creative minds.

“Writing Under The Tuscan Sun” will not only fill your pages, but your souls. Come be part of our Cortona circle of creators and find your own wild unrestrained mind in the quiet of Tuscany where the noise of the outside world disappears.

About Cortona

Cortona is one of the true jewels of the Tuscan “hill towns.”    Cortona, which is often called the “City of Art,” has its origin as an Etruscan city that pre-dates Roman times with sections of its walls dating back some 2500 years.  As is typical of Tuscan hill-towns, Cortona is a walled city that, for purposes of defense, was built atop a prominent geographical point. The stone buildings and streets not only have the romance, style, and charm that are particular to Tuscany, but also speak of the lives and times Cortona has witnessed. An encounter with Cortona is an encounter with music & art, with history and with spirituality. Getting to know this timeless city is a real rediscovery of our past. Cortona offers testimony to its history as well as an enchanting view of the landscape enclosed by Lake Trasimeno and the Apennine mountains.
